Transforming Education Systems in Africa

Wema Core Foundation is dedicated to strengthening education ecosystems through evidence-based interventions, systemic reform, and compassionate practice across Uganda and the African continent.

Our Purpose & Direction

Guiding principles that shape our work and define our impact

Our Vision

An education ecosystem where systems are adequately supported, evidence-driven, and inclusive, enabling every child, young person, and educator to thrive and reach their full potential within resilient learning environments.

Our Mission

To advance the right to quality education and wellbeing for children and youth through evidence-informed implementation, rigorous data generation, and strategic advocacy for equitable education financing and systemic reform.

Our Foundation Story

Origins, evolution, and commitment to systemic change

Established in response to persistent and interconnected challenges affecting education ecosystems across Uganda and the African continent, Wema Core Foundation emerged from a recognition that traditional approaches were insufficient to address the complex barriers to quality education.

We observed that education outcomes were increasingly constrained by psychosocial stressors, teacher burnout, fragmented career pathways, weak family engagement, and misaligned financing priorities. These systemic issues demanded an integrated, evidence-based response.

Grounded in the meaning of Wema – kindness and goodness in Swahili – our foundation is anchored in the conviction that lasting impact is achieved when compassionate practice is matched with rigorous evidence, transparent accountability, and systems-level transformation.

Founded on principles of systemic change rather than isolated interventions
Developed through extensive engagement with educators, learners, families, and policymakers

Our Core Values

Foundational principles that guide our decisions, partnerships, and programs

Kindness as Practice

More than a concept, kindness is our operational standard—informing how we design programs, engage partners, and measure impact with compassion and respect.

Human Dignity & Wellbeing

Placing psychosocial safety and human potential at the centre of all education interventions, recognizing that wellbeing is foundational to learning.

Equity & Inclusion

Proactively prioritizing marginalized learners, educators, and families to ensure education systems serve those most affected by systemic barriers.

Evidence-Driven Practice

Grounding all decisions in rigorous data, research, and continuous learning loops that inform adaptation and improvement.

Collaborative Systems Thinking

Strengthening existing institutions rather than duplicating efforts, working through partnerships to create sustainable systemic change.

Accountability & Learning

Embedding reflection, transparency, and adaptive improvement into every aspect of our work, holding ourselves accountable to communities and partners.

Our Organizational Mandate

Three complementary roles that define our approach to systemic change
